Runner Dies in Record Breaking Heat of London Marathon

Last Sunday, more than 40,000 runners endured the sweltering London heat for hours as they participated in unarguably the hottest London Marathon in the history. The temperatures rose to a record high of 24.1C during the event and the competitors were advised to stay hydrated throughout the race to prevent medical emergencies.

From the thousands of amateur and professional marathoners who ran together, many braved the brutal conditions successfully, while an unfortunate few collapsed before making it across the finish line – one runner even died from dehydration.

Hottest Marathon in the History

It’s official: 2018 London Marathon was the hottest one by far with temperatures soaring above 24C as more than 40,000 runners sprinted across St. James’s Park on Sunday. Participants were warned beforehand that the weather conditions could become even more unbearable on track due to the heat radiated from other runners and the roads. But there was nothing that could stop the thousands of professional and amateur marathoners from participating in one of the biggest marathons in the world.

The race began at 10:00 a.m. after the start button was pressed by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth from Windsor Castle. The highest temperature that has ever been recorded prior to this this year’s event was during 1996 marathon in the same park when runners braved a high of 22.7C for 26.2 miles. 2018 London marathon saw an increase of 1.4 degree Celsius, which resulted in a number of medical emergencies and one death.

Death of 29-year-old Chef

Even though the exact cause of Campbell’s death has not been revealed, many are speculating that he died from dehydration in the sweltering 24.1 degrees Celsius heat

After 29-year-old chef named Matt Campbell collapsed on the track 36 kilometers into the race and was immediately carried to the hospital, the race organizers announced that the doctors had been unable to save his life.

Campbell, who had participated in the culinary reality television show called MasterChef: The Professionals, was an avid runner and had participated in a number of long-distance races before. Three weeks ago, the deceased set a new personal time record of 02:56:50 in Manchester Marathon and had hoped to beat his old record in Last Week’s London Marathon.

Campbell started running in 2016 after his father’s death. He said that running helped him cope with the loss but soon turned into a passion after he began participating in marathons. In his recent Instagram post, the deceased chef proudly announced his new personal record time. Campbell said that he couldn’t believe that he had improved so much physically and mentally after running for just two years.

Marathoners Aim for Guinness World Records

Almost 5 liters of water were distributed per person during the marathon, more than in any other racing event in the world, and more than 38,000 runners had made it through the finish line. The marathon organizers warned beforehand that the race could become even more challenging for those running in heavy costumes or fancy dresses due to the sweltering heat.

A number of participants ran in costumes such as a suit of armor, and other silly attires in hopes of setting new Guinness World Records. One competitor named Rob Pope became the fastest ever marathoner to cross the finish line dressed as a forest grump, finishing the race in a record time of 02:36:41. Pope has run 15,000 miles across the U.S. dressed as Forest Grump from Tom Hank’s hit 1994 movie following the same route as the film character, but the new world record holder says that he has never been to a racing event as amazing as the London Marathon.

A Record Number of Applications

More than 380,000 people applied for this year’s marathon event in London, setting a new record for the highest entries in any marathon in the world and almost double the number of people who applied for the London Marathon last year. Mathew Rees, who made headlines last year for helping another contestant named David Wyeth get to the finish line, participated in this year’s marathon as well.

Both contestants managed to finish the race at identical times. Other notable contestants in this year’s marathon included Chalie Guenigault, the police officer who was stabbed during a terror attack on London Bridge as well as the firefighters who helped extinguish the Grenfell Tower blaze.
