Fast Food Potentially Combats Skin Cancer
There is a relationship between fast food and skin cancer. Fast food is widely believed to be dangerous to human health. On the contrary, fast food possesses a unique class of fat that has the ability to destroy or avert skin cancer, as reported by one research conducted by Boston University.
There are many types of cancers that affect the skin, but there is one particular skin cancer that has been reputed to be the worst and most destructive. It is called ‘malignant melanoma.’ The genesis of malignant melanoma usually begins with the outbreak of a reddish and undefined structured blot. As time goes on, the blot develops into a larger ugly shape. Malignant melanoma is flexible, and if not detected on time, it extends rapidly to other parts of the body.
Studies have shown that malignant melanoma is associated with vulnerability to the sun. The rays emanating from the UV produces sunburns and in turn, makes the deadly cells called melanocytes to be altered. The melanocytes have tendencies to generate cancer.
A report from the American Cancer Society exposed the rate at which cancer spreads. Statistics have shown the growth of the disease is on the rise and the scariest news is that about 12, 000 people are likely to be infected in 2017.
Every human being is prone to the disease since it affects the skin color. Malignant melanoma is dependent on skin type that is most common in its environment. Scientists discovered that light-skinned people have a higher chance of getting it than dark-skinned people. The most popular type of the whites is the cutaneous malignant melanoma.
Importantly, several factors are responsible for this health condition. These factors include environmental influences such as artificial UV sources. Investigations have shown that UV rays use the risky volume of UVA light.
Other factors are the economic capacities of some high-class neighborhoods. The residents in the areas are fond of spending their vacations in outdoor locations where shields against the sun are minimal.
Unregulated exposure to sun, especially for younger children, is very risky. Suntanning may be beneficial to the body, but too much of it is unpalatable.
Skin type is another determinant. Individuals who are not accustomed to staying long under the sun have weaker immunity against it than those who seem to be constantly under the sun. Also, people should be watchful of too many blots and blemishes on their skins because they could be pointers to melanoma.
Malignant melanoma is also hereditary in some cases.
A medical professional, Rutao Cui had spear-headed a research. He was assisted by a group of scientists based at Boston University. The team used mice as objects of the study. The mice had fair skins and red-headed, just like the red-headed humans.
It was revealed that a dull skin has the worst tendency to contract melanoma. This was the case with red-headed mice because they eventually contracted melanoma.
However, when the animals were given the uncommon fat found in fast food (palmitic acid), their vulnerability levels to acquire it were reduced.
Another aspect of the study which dealt with processes of the fat activities was examined. The fat is tied to one special protein ciphered by the gene called MC1R. This MC1R gene is peculiar because its end-product usually decide the darkness of skin. Mice that have the MC1R genes were used because of their similarities with human genetic makeup.
The most effective measures to be taken against this skin cancer is to discover it before it’s too late. When it has grown to the malignant stage, then chances of curing it will be reduced.
Preventive measures against melanoma are many. However, the most effective ones involve the following;
- Avoid staying under the sun for hours
- Protection against UV light should be paramount. Whether you are used to suntanning or not, find ways to run away from it. Also, do away with tanning lanterns. Children should be shielded from the heat and rays of the sun as well.
- Always use sunscreen cosmetics. Adorn your head with thick hats and covering clothes, coupled with sunglasses.
- Be alert when there are too many blemishes on your body. Consult a doctor as soon as possible if you observe some unusual skin issues.
- Avoid sunbathing. It is dangerous and a license to melanoma. It is advisable always to protect your skin from sunburns. You can wear thick clothes and use sunscreen all the time.
Finally, eat healthy fast food wisely. All fast food is not bad neither are they good. The key word is ‘watchful.’
