Beauty Myths We Wrongly Believe In
Whether you like your own body or not, there probably was a time when you wanted to change something on it. Here are some of the most common things women dislike on their bodies and run to search help from the beauty industry. Pharmaceutic companies have convinced them they can change anything, but the real truth is a bit different. And while they are selling their products like crazy, here is the real truth behind their catchy commercials.
LIE NO. 1:
YOU CAN ELIMINATE YOUR CELLULITE
This would be very nice, but NO, you cannot eliminate your cellulite! It seems that nothing can be done to permanently get rid of it, not even the liposuction can help. The secret is in its structure – it consists of fat deposits that are caught between the fibrous bands connecting the skin’s tissues.
These bands squeeze the fat under the skin, and the result of that is the thing we know as cellulite. Generally speaking, a person is genetically predetermined if she will or won’t get cellulite. It doesn’t even matter whether you’re fat or thin. But what you can do is to reduce its orange peel-like appearance by using creams which contain caffeine. They can tighten and smooth the skin while their moisturizer hydrates the skin, making cellulite a little less visible. On the other hand, you can try using a self-tanner because a darker complexion can help camouflage it.
LIE NO. 2:
YOU CAN NARROW YOUR PORES
Well, not exactly. It is actually impossible to change the size of your pores! What you can do is to make them look smaller. That is possible even with the help of some natural substances such as egg whites. These things really tighten the skin, giving the illusion of smaller pores, but it is just a temporary effect.
LIE NO. 3:
IF YOU USE WAX TO REMOVE HAIR, FEWER HAIRS WILL GROW BACK
Well, actually, this could happen, but after 20-years-time of the process. What wax is really doing is that it rips the hair out at the follicles and this repeated injury to the follicles could damage some of them to the point that the hair won’t grow back anymore. So, the real truth applied here is that wax cannot help you diminish the amount of hair growing on your body more that the common process of shaving does.
LIE NO.4:
YOU WILL GET VARICOSE OR SPIDER VEINS IF YOU SIT WITH YOUR LEGS CROSSED
Not really, but standing could cause it. To begin with, genetic predisposition is the basic reason for this vein troubles to arise. On the other side, if you have a job that requires standing many hours a day, that could help develop spider veins or varicose veins. Why is it so? Well, because standing makes the vascular network work really hard to pump blood from the legs up to the heart. Pregnancy also puts some additional pressure on the vascular system and physical traumas can cause these issues.
LIE NO. 5:
YOU CAN MAKE YOUR HAIR SHINE BY BRUSHING IT 100 TIMES A DAY
Trichologists (dermatologists who study hair) say that this is an exaggerated belief. One would make more damage than good with this daily practice since the hair breaks if pulled too much. However, gentle brushing can make it shine. Normal brushing distributes the natural oils from the scalp down the hair which makes it reflect more light. Additionally, light brushing removes dirt and even stimulates blood circulation in the head, which nourishes follicles and keeps them healthy.
LIE NO.6:
YOU CAN ELIMINATE STRETCH MARKS BY APPLYING OLIVE OIL OR COCOA BUTTER
Not true! Stretch marks are formed in the layer of the skin which the cocoa butter and olive oil can’t reach. These marks are a completely normal thing to appear when skin expands quickly, for example in pregnancy, when the collagen and elastic fibers break and cannot be recovered. The only thing one can do is to fight the itching.
LIE NO. 7:
IF YOU PLUCK A GRAY HAIR, 10 MORE WILL GROW IN ITS PLACE
False! How can 10 more hairs grow from a sole follicle? Impossible! On the other side, there are some studies conducted which have proven that men’s beards grow faster in summer, but that doesn’t include the hair on their heads. On the other side, the only time women’s hair grows faster is during pregnancy, because of increased hormones.
LIE NO.8:
IF YOU PUT VASELINE ON YOUR FACE EVERY NIGHT, IT WILL PREVENT WRINKLES
There is a story saying that Marilyn Monroe used to put a thick layer of Vaseline on her face to always look young, but that doesn’t mean it is a good thing to do. It is true that Vaseline is the strongest moisturizer because it forces oils into the skin and prevents them from evaporating. Another truth is that during the process of aging, the skin loses its ability to retain moisture, and thus looks older. On the other hand, Vaseline is so greasy that it can create other problems, for example, create pimples because the pores are closed and the skin cannot breathe.
LIE NO. 9:
DRINKING WATER KEEPS YOUR SKIN FROM DRYING OUT
Lie! What keeps your skin moist isn’t water, but oil. Yes, drinking water helps your vital organs work properly, and too little water in your body can make you look weary. On the other side, your skin can still look dry even if you drink twenty glasses of water a day.
