Drinking coffee is part of almost everyone’s life. Some people can’t even function without it. They need their daily dose of caffeine before being able to do their tasks. For some student’s coffee shop is where they seek refuge, especially when they need to review for their exams or finish their school papers. People often meet up with their friends in coffee shops to catch up with everyone. You will definitely love coffee more because of the health benefits that you can gain from drinking it.
The health benefits of drinking coffee have been controversial for a very long time. But thanks to several researchers, there have been several discoveries to enlighten everyone. Here are some of the health benefits that you can get from drinking coffee.
- Coffee is a rich supply of antioxidants
Antioxidants are helping our bodies in numerous ways: fights inflammation that might be caused by arthritis, atherosclerosis, and many types of cancer; neutralizes free radicals that are part of everyday metabolic functions; helps our bodies against oxidative stress that damages our cells; and the presence of chlorogenic acid that prevents cardiovascular diseases.
- Caffeine improves short-term memory
Researchers from Austria conducted a study where they let volunteers drink coffee and a placebo. Based on the results, people who drank coffee exhibited better memory skills and reaction time. It appears that particular areas of the brain responsible for memory and concentration, providing a boost to short-term memory. Although, it is still not clear how long the effect lasts.
- Coffee is healthy for the heart
Based on a research study from Dutch, where 37,000 people are involved over the span of 13 years, they found out that moderate coffee drinkers or those who consumed between two to four cups daily, had 20% lower risk of heart disease compared to people who don’t drink and those that are heavy drinkers of coffee. Evidence supported that coffee protects our body from arterial damage caused by inflammation.
- Coffee reduces the risk of depression
It is still no clear mechanism how coffee can prevent depression. But several data suggested that there is an inverse relationship between coffee consumption and depression. Thus, heavy coffee drinkers have the lowest risk of depression. It seems that caffeine activates neurotransmitters that control a person’s mood, including dopamine and serotonin.
- Coffee protects your liver
It lowers the risk of liver cancer and lower incidence of cirrhosis. There is also an inverse correlation between increased coffee consumption and blood levels of liver enzymes, which indicates inflammation and damage to the liver. The more the coffee the person drank, the lower their levels of enzymes.
- Coffee can make us smarter
Based on clinical trials, people who are taking coffee showed improvements in several aspects of brain functions. As a result, these people have better performance with memory, attentiveness, energy levels, reaction times, and other general cognitive functions. The main reason is that coffee blocks the adenosine – an inhibitory neurotransmitter. In return, the brain was able to fire neurons due to the increase in the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine.
- Coffee can burn fat
For those who want to have a slimmer body, one natural way is to drink coffee. There are studies that prove coffee can increase human’s metabolic rate by 3 to 11%. For lean people, you can burn fat as much as 29% and 10% in obese individuals. Thus, you no longer need to take medical capsules or other food supplements – simply drink coffee and exercise.
- Coffee can protect you from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
Currently, there is still no known cure for Alzheimer’s disease. It is the most common neurodegenerative disease that leads to dementia. This is a health problem all over the world. What we can only do is prevent it from happening to us. Aside from exercising and eating healthy foods, studies show that drinking coffee may help as well. Coffee was able to lower the risk of a person having this disease by 65%.
