You Cannot Prevent Lupus, But This is How You Can Know If You Have It Before It’s Too Late!
Throughout history, human beings have suffered from a wide range of different diseases, many of which did not even have a cure until the previous century. Thanks to advancements in medical science, we are now not only able to cure thousands of medical conditions, but also prevent their occurrence in the future through effective vaccination.
Also, there are many conditions for which we don’t have a cure or vaccine yet, but at least we are able to understand the harm they do to our body, and this allows us to better manage their symptoms.
However, not all conditions are easily diagnosable, such as lupus. This condition is reportedly prevalent in around 1.5 million people in the United States alone, but many people are not able to recognize its presence. But, perhaps a clearer understanding of this condition may allow you some insight that may help in diagnosing it or even preventing its occurrence.
In the most basic sense, lupus is the name given to the phenomenon when your immune system develops a problem with its recognition mechanism for detecting faulty cells and rather starts attacking the healthy cells as well as tissues as well.
According to experts, almost 70% of the cases are called systemic lupus, which basically means that the immune system starts attacking one of the major organs in the body such as the heart or the brain.
This autoimmune disease leaves the immune system incapable of differentiating between internal body parts and unwanted externalities, and as a result, the immune system goes in overdrive and starts destroying healthy body tissue. There are many symptoms which can allow you to detect the existence of lupus in your system, such as stiffness in the joints, swelling, sores in the mouth, pain in the chest, and also seizures, to name a few.
But perhaps the most common as well as difficult to bear symptom, as reported by around 65% of patients living with lupus, is chronic pain. Naturally, everybody wants to avoid its occurrence, but the only problem is that researchers have not yet been able to discover the causes of the condition, at least not in concrete terms.
However, there are still some connections which have been drawn between some human factors and lupus, but again, none of these factors alone is responsible for causing the condition.
What Causes Lupus?
As mentioned above, we don’t understand the causes of lupus. But, we do believe that the following factors contribute to the triggering of the condition. The first factor is genetics and, according to researchers, the sibling of a lupus patient is at 20 times more risk of getting the condition.
The second factor is race, as statistical evidence has shown the condition to exist more dominantly in particular ethnicities such as African and Native Americans, Asians, and also Latinos, to name a few. Thirdly, hormones play a role as well, and according to doctors, generally, women are at a greater risk of getting lupus compared to men.
