She’s Human After All! Oprah Winfrey Battled This Serious Infection, But She’s All Better Now

Oprah Winfrey may be an iron lady, but not even this media mogul is immune to diseases. As she revealed when she was recently on Ellen, the 65-year-old is just from battling a serious bout of pneumonia. So serious was her condition that Oprah’s doctor was beyond terrified.

Oprah re-lived her pneumonia experience while on Ellen

After returning from one of her many trips across the globe, the media personality thought she was coming down with a cold. Upon visiting the hospital, however, she ended in the ER, where they diagnosed her with the bacterial infection.

Lung Specialist

She was then started on antibiotics, but her condition was not improving. Oprah went back to the hospital for a CT scan, and that’s when she was referred to a lung specialist. Hitherto, the media personality hadn’t thought that she was in really bad shape, save for a little rattling.

She said just as much to the lung specialist, but the look on his face when he put the stethoscope on her neck told her that it wasn’t good at all. And being a certified professional, the specialist didn’t try and sugarcoat it – he served it to her hot.

He even insisted that she had to cancel everything she had planned for the next month, in addition to forbidding her from flying during said month. As Oprah told Ellen, she has never had to cancel work before, but that the doctor was so insistent on it she just had to comply.

Turns out that the rest was actually very good for her. That, coupled with an inhaler and more antibiotics, and she’s back to the Oprah we all know and love. And if she was happy that she was finally healthy, her doctor must have been over the moon.

Still talking to Ellen, Winfrey revealed that the lung specialist was visibly relieved that she got better, even going as far as thanking her for it. Shouldn’t he have thanked himself though? He’s the one who prescribed the drugs. But you get where he’s coming from.

Should anything have happened to Oprah under his watch, God forbid, he most certainly wouldn’t have been able to forgive himself, don’t you think? And that’s the exact impression the 65-year-old got from the doctor’s reaction.

Creating Awareness

Now that she’s completely healed up, Oprah is taking it upon herself to create awareness on pneumonia and how to prevent it. While on Ellen, she urged the audience to make sure they got their pneumonia and flu shots.

She said that the illness changed her whole perspective on health and wellness, and she plans to share her views with the rest of the country in her Vision tour scheduled for next year. When Oprah speaks, America and indeed the rest of the world listen, so the battle against pneumonia may just have added an ultra-powerful weapon in its arsenal.

In her own words, the tour is all about motivating people to take very good care of their loved ones as well as themselves and to prevent pneumonia.

To you, it may seem like any other respiratory tract infection, but pneumonia is actually a killer disease. It is one of the most significant infections causing infant mortality rates. If we can’t protect our children, what does that say about our future?
