WORLD-RECORD BREAKER AND ROCK CLIMBER SHARES SECRET TO SUCCESS
Most young women are often too wrapped up with two things, their love life as well as their looks. Theirs absolutely nothing wrong with that. However, it is pretty unlikely for a young woman to actually have an unusual hobby. Meet Sasha DiGiulian, you might think that she is just an ordinary young woman, but she is actually more than just a pretty face because she may have had broken a couple of world records herself.
MEET SASHA, A WORLD CHAMPION ROCK CLIMBER
Who would have thought that a simple girl like Sasha DiGuilian actually dreams of climbing almost every mountain she can as if it is just nothing? She actually started climbing at the of 6 and started climbing competitively at the age of 7. When she was 11, she managed to climb her first 5.13b(8a). When she graduated high school, she didn’t immediately start thinking of going to college like most young adults her age, in fact, she actually took a year off and traveled to be able to concentrate in competing internationally on both indoor and outdoor climbing.
She managed to snag the Gold Medal at the World Championships in Italy in 2011 and continued to break multiple records over the years. However, in 2016, she actually managed to finish her degree in non-fiction creative writing in Columbia University.
WORLD RECORD HOLDER AT THE AGE OF 19
For years, DiGuilian is known for breaking records, but she first became known for actually being the very first woman to climb the Magic Mushroom or more commonly known as the Murder Wall, which is actually considered to be one of the most difficult routes on the Eiger Mountain’s North Face in the Swiss Alps, when it comes to climbing, this is known to the most dangerous one to climb but the 22-year-old DiGuilian managed to do it as if it was just climbing a small tree.
If that wasn’t impressive, then here are a few more. When it comes to the indoor competitive rock climbing sphere, Sasha is actually holding not just one, not just two, but three US National Champion wins with one Overall World Champion. She currently holds the record of the most attempts when it comes to women’s rock climbing both indoors and outdoors. In fact, at such a young age of 19, she actually became the very first and so far the only American woman to ever climb the historic ascent of Era Vella in Margalef, Spain.
This is considered to be the hardest climb ever achieved by a woman. In an interview regarding how she felt about being the only woman who managed to make it to the top, she simply said, “Honestly, I’m kind of in a state of astonished shock. It’s this state of physical and mental disbelief. Over the course of 24 hours, I’ve been at the top of the Eiger and in New York City.”
This just proves that women are actually capable of doing unexpectedly incredible things despite all the criticism. When DiGuilian was asked what actually pushed her to do this, she said, “If you never try something then you never really know what you’re capable of. With the Eiger, it’s this iconic mountain that I always knew about but didn’t know my ability to achieve it. It’s that feeling of success at the end that motivates you. With alpine climbing, there must be this chemical in your brain that enables you to forget the suffering,” She also explained how the beginning of it all was great and that her dream basically motivated and excited her at the same time that leads to her ultimate satisfaction when she managed to reach the top.
AN INFLUENTIAL YOUNG WOMAN
DiGuilian definitely defied the odds after breaking multiple world records when it comes to climbing, which is why she is considered to be such an influential woman at such a young age. She is the current Athlete Ambassador for Right to Play, Up2U Sports, Outdoor Foundation, and more. She also managed to receive multiple awards and acknowledgments like GLAMOUR Magazine’s Top College Women of the Year 2016, The Cutting Edge Athlete Award for 2014 courtesy of American Alpine Club, The Golden Piton Award, and the Afro Rock Legend Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Outdoors.
