Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar You Have to Know
Apple cider vinegar, commonly referred to as ACV, is a form of vinegar made from the extract of apples, yeast and sugar. Apple cider vinegar has gained much popularity on the internet as different articles by bloggers and nutritionists have surfaced promoting the health and cosmetic benefits of consuming ACV. People are particularly interested in its formation process because they want to obtain its benefits by utilizing it for different purposes.
ACV is made by crushing the apple and obtaining its extract to which yeast is added later for starting the fermentation process. The sugar is converted into alcohol through fermentation. During second stage of fermentation, alcohol is converted into acetic acid. The sour taste of apple cider vinegar is due to malic acid and acetic acid.
There are many health and cosmetics benefits associated with the use of apple cider vinegar. However, most of these benefits are not backed up by any credible pieces of research. Very little literature is available regarding the medicinal value of apple cider vinegar, but science does not provide any conclusive evidence to prove any such claims. According to the literature available, the benefits of apple cider vinegar range from resolving hair and digestive problems to bone related issues and particularly obesity.
But using ACV in correct proportion and method is essential to utilizing its benefits to the fullest. Wrong proportions or methods of consumption could result in health related problems such as diarrhea, nausea or potential kidney problems. Stated below are some benefits which can be obtained with the usage of ACV (along with proportion and method of consumption).
Controls Carb Cravings
Many people experience sugar spikes in their body after consuming their meal. This happens because the sugar level in their blood is raised which causes the brain to produce more insulin. When insulin is produced, the brain signals the body to consume a meal despite the fact that sugar level in the blood is already high.
According to one study, if 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar are taken along with main meal, then post meal carb cravings are controlled significantly. ACV helps in stabilizing the sugar level in blood.
Controls Diabetes Type 2
As discussed previously, ACV could help in controlling carb cravings by stabilizing the sugar levels in the blood. Thus, ACV consumption could also benefit the patients of Type 2 diabetes. According to one study, the consumption of apple cider vinegar slows down the digestive process of complex carbohydrates, thus adding sugar in blood slowly over a period of time.
This phenomenon is particularly beneficial for people suffering from pre-diabetes or insulin resistance in which insulin is available in higher amounts but sugar level in blood is not stable.
Another study suggested taking two spoons of ACV along with one ounce of cheese before going to bed. This helps in controlling the sugar levels while fasting, causing blood sugar levels to reduce by 4 percent. However, as diabetes is a sensitive issue, therefore patients of diabetes shall discuss with their doctors before going for the remedy of apple cider vinegar.
Provides Relief From Eczema
Apple cider vinegar has anti-bacterial properties as it can dissolve the bacterial formation on skin, which happens usually in the form of eczema. However, direct application of apple cider vinegar is not recommended because it can potentially harm the skin in form of burns.
Dermatologists recommend dissolving about one liter of apple cider vinegar in a half-filled bath tub of water. Body part should not be soaked for more than 10 minutes in this solution, so remain cautious of that warning.
Reduces Obesity
Apple cider vinegar helps in regulation of digestive system by stabilizing the acid level in the stomach. According to nutritionists, if the acidity in the stomach is low, then pH levels in the stomach become higher causing potential stomach problems such as acid reflex, indigestion, among other related issues. Low acidity level in the stomach creates suitable environment for gut bacteria to grow causing bacterial imbalance in the stomach.
The person suffering from such a condition cannot digest food properly and hence may gain weight. Weight is gained because of fat storage around digestive organs during the digestion process. Continuous weight gain results in obesity and other health related problems.
