How the Pop Culture Influences the Way We Lose Weight
The media and the celebrities influence us on how we want to live our lives. They become the source of somehow unattainable body and beauty expectations. They become the standards on how beauty is perceived by the people, and no matter how much we try to normalize these influence, there are still leaks that will continue to drip.
Social media has become an outlet for people’s platform, and just like that, new trends are created. Media sites like YouTube and Instagram are our source of daily hacks and tips that can help us lose weight fast. Some are healthy activities while others are just placebo. But despite the lack of scientific evidence, people still continue to consume these products that we see on celebrities and social media personalities.
Waist Trainer
One of the social media cult on weight loss is using waist trainers. This trend become more popular when celebrities like Kim Kardashian-West and Kylie Jenner post their pictures on their social media accounts using it. Companies manufacturing these garments felt the increase in sales up to 250%. There are many counter researches that claims the danger of waist training but it doesn’t seem to affect people’s perspective on it. As long as the celebrities are using it, ordinary people will continue to use them, too.
Detox Teas
Detox teas, just like other dietary supplements, claim to help us achieve a faster weight loss process without spending too much time on the gym. This cult-favorite has two types of teas in a package, one for morning and one before going to bed. It’s a way to cleanse our bodies from impurities so we can see more results when we work out. One brands that we usually see online are FitTea, FlatTummyTea, and Bootea. Celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens and Demi Lovato are one of the media influencers for this weight loss trend.
Apple Cider Vinegar
This natural way to reduce abdominal fat has taken the internet by storm. The media site, YouTube, is home to the many videos that review this product’s many health claims. The different videos online also probe more people to try the product and incorporate it on their diet regimens. To consume this, bloggers usually dilute 1 tablespoon of ACV in an 8 oz of water. Because the trend seems to stay for a longer period of time, many dietitians and bloggers are coming up with many concoctions to make ACV more palatable. Miranda Kerr and Megan Fox are just few of the celebrities who swear by this magical drink.
Squats
Women always encounter unrealistic body expectation on the daily basis, and one reason for that is the media. On the early 20s, people give too much importance in breast size. Women who are flat-chested receives body shaming remarks, while women with bigger cups are perceived to be more beautiful. As a result, breast-enhancing procedures become popular, and women felt pressured to undergo one. A decade later, the media switched lanes and are now focusing on buttocks. This trend is so popular that there are many exercise videos on how to achieve a firmer buttocks that are flooding the internet. And because this is what society dictates to be beautiful, many men and women try their best to live up to this expectation.
Garcinia Cambogia
Before waist trainers and detox teas surface the diet industry, diet pills are already owning the crown. Most diet pills have L-carnitine, but it was put aside when Garcinia Cambogia was introduced. It is a fruit that is said to be a natural ingredient to keep fats at bay. The pill gain traction in the weight loss world when it was discussed in the Dr. Oz Show. After that, differenct companies started to release their own versions of the promising pill, all claiming to contain 100% pure Garcinia Cambogia extract. Only shows that whatever product that promotes weight loss will surely sell.
There are many ways to achieve the goal we want, but the false advertisements and promises can get too blinding sometimes. There are no short cuts to losing weight, but there can also be no harm if we follow some of these trends in MODERATION.
